As a stylist, there are certain style icons of hair that you never forget: Twiggy, Rachael (Friends), the “Posh” cut, and most of all Farah Fawcett! With every era there is a cut or style that everyone wants. You all know what i’m talking about. When Victoria Beckham stepped out with her stacked, a-symmetrical bob, how many of your friends went out and got the same cut? In one day I did six in a row! I can do that cut with my eyes closed.

Well, as the cold weather is slowly approaching, everyone wants something “hot” for winter. Well, Farah (God rest her soul) is “hot” for winter. Artists always become sought-after when they pass, so why shouldn’t it be the same for haircuts? In tribute of Farah Fawcett, her style is coming back! Yay! Long, layered hair is in ladies. I’m not talking about those bone straight styles we get with a flat iron. Give your CHI a bit of hibernation time, and whip out those hot rollers. Long, sexy, bouncy, flirty hair is all the rage. Have a kick in your step and some bounce in your hair as we all pay tribute to Charlies original angel!

Okay, I know what you all are thinking…. How do I accomplish this look? Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo (I know we have a recession and Pantene/Herbal Essence is easy on the pocket, but for a couple more dollars you will really see and feel the difference in a true professional product–Redken, Pureology, Paul Mitchell) . Next, towel-dry your hair to get most of the moisture out. Massage a dollop (handful) of mouse through your ends, then whip your head upside down and dry it completely with the blow-dryer. Meanwhile your hot-rollers should be plugged and warming up. Once your hair is dry, take small to medium sections and wrap your hair around the rollers , making sure your ends lay smooth on the roller. After rolling on the rollers give them all a spray (a pliable hairspray will do the trick), let them cool on your head for 15-20 minutes. Take the rollers out and give it a gentle finger comb, and your done!! As I rush out my front door every morning, it’s a challenge to spend hours in front of the bathroom mirror to be up to par with the women from decades past. OH, how nice to be in a silk robe, a fresh cup of hot coffee, and dozens of hot rollers in my hair while I carefully apply my make-up. The retro women of the 50’s and 60’s always left the house put together, and never, ever with wet hair. GHASTLY! Ladies, what is wrong with us?HISTORY is supposed to repeat itself, so, lets repeat what the women decades ago did: TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!

Lets start with the obvious: HAIR. Here is what you need, don’t worry the list is short.

- Bobby pins

- Hair/finishing spray

- Comb/brush

Now, section out your hair and gently mist it with some spray. Take small sections at a time and curl them into ringlets (Shirley Temple or Goddess, whatever you prefer). Flip your hair over and gently separate or comb. Gently mist with spray again and that’s it!

Complete your look with some red lips, smoky eyes and a natural base makeup.

Lately, all my clients have been asking what the new hairstyles for Spring 2009 are. Everyone wants to look hip and fresh for the commencement of spring. Although with today’s weather, I’m a little sceptical that it’s around the corner. Without further adieu, let me announce what’s hot with hair these days.

#1. Bangs! Look on almost any magazine cover, my bet is that the model on the cover is sporting bangs. Pick a bang, any bang: a side-fringe (side bangs), heavy “curtain” bangs, choppy bangs or even those tiny school-girl bangs.

#2. Open-Book Parts. Side-parts are over for the Spring. Part your hair down the middle with a clean flat-ironed hippie-chic look. Or, for you wild girls out there, try a body foaming mousse like Loreal Texture Expert Expansion Body Activating Mousse – 6.5oz, scrunch and diffuse or air-dry.

#3. Bob It. Your hair that is. Short bobs are HUGE for Spring. Don’t be a chicken, get a short, boyish style up to the nape of your neck. Wear it smooth and sleek or wavy. If you really want to step it up a notch, add some bangs to your short new do.

#4. My little pony. High ponies or low ponies, they are all the rage on the runway. Make sure you are using metal-free bands to avoid breakage like GOODY Large No Damage Elastic 14 pcs. To dress them up, wrap a section of hair around the base of your ponytail and secure it witha  pin.

#5. Fat Curls. Shirley Temple need not apply. Romantic hair is what we are craving this Spring. Get your 1 inch barrel curling iron (~ Hot Tools 1108 Pro Marcel Curling Iron 1″ ~is my favorite) and start curling. Short hair? Not a problem, use a smaller iron to get curls, but don’t get too close to the roots.

#6. You say “bun” I say “chignon”.  Swoop that hair off your neck. Put your hair in a ponytail, twist it round and round and secure it with a couple of bobby-pins. Keep it smooth in the front and loose or messy in the back. Use a smoothing serum to keep those frizzes down.

1 Apply Redken Straight and Smooth to your hair while still damp but not soaking wet. Blow dry using low-heat settings, make sure you are pointing at the scalp that tends to expand the cuticle and gives more volume.

2 When dry, take small sections of hair(I DO MEAN SMALL) and use a good quality flat iron to straighten the hair.

3 If the hair is tough to work with,use a light mist of  Spray Starch 15 by Redken.

4 If this fails, call us.
