Being a blonde, an itchy situation

I’ve been a blond two years now, and let me tell you something, IT HURTS! Every two weeks I do my roots because I can’t bear to see my dark, unsightly roots pearcing through my scalp. I don’t look forward to doing my root touch-up, and not because I have to sit there for an hour while I process. As soon as the color goes on my scalp it begins to itch and burn. My sister asks me why I continue to make myself blonde if twice monthly I suffer for an hour while my hair changes color. It’s not just while the color is on my scalp that it is painful, but for two days after I have an uncontrollable itch in the back of my head. Okay people, I promise you I am not making this up. Not everyone itches with haircolor, but at least half of the people do!

Wouldn’t it be great if being a blonde wasn’t so painful? What ingredients makes me suffer? Well, I’ve found out the answer. Miracles Salon (Arlington, VA) had an educational color class this past Thursday for a new colorline, Affinage. This color is not abrassive like other colors, it will not fade, it most certainly won’t make your scalp itch (even if you are trying to lighten in significantly). What makes it stand out the most is that it is sulfate-free.

Well why should you care about using a sulfate-free shampoos and hair colors? There are many health concerns lately with sulfates leading the way for an industry of sulfate-free products. Using products with sulfates can actually damage your hair follicle, and yes can lead to HAIR LOSS! Sulfates are used as a preservative in almost everything, but when used on your head, they strip the hair and your scalp of natural oils you need, causing your hair to dry out; not to mention that it strips away your hair color making your salon visits more frequent.

So after Micheal, the educator for Affinage in Las Vegas formulated my color.... the color went on my scalp with, ghasp, not an itch or burn in sight! I'm sold on the sulfates, I hope you are too Please vote for Miracles for best Salon.

The Peoples Choice Awards….Celebrity Hairstyles

Happy New Year!

We at Miracles Salon wish you all happiness and health for 2010! An arctic start here in the Washington, D.C. area, but that doesn’t mean that under those hats, hoods and scarves we shouldn’t have red carpet-worthy hair.

The new year is starting off with a bunch of award shows where celebrities are going to be wearing the seasons must haves and ofcourse, the “it” hair styles. This past Sunday was the People’s Choice Awards, and on January 17th the Golden Globe awards will be airing on TV. I know Racheal Zoe must be in a scramble trying to find the must have dresses of the season, and accessories to match. So, as we brace the winter chills, spring fashions will be in full force.

What was going on at the People’s Choice Awards? There was one overall trend when it came to hair, most celebrities had their hair down in a soft wave: Mariah Carey, Jessica Alba, Carrie Underwood– but also Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman who opted for the flat iron look. Ladies, I keep saying it, bring those hot rollers out! With a little bit of practice, it should take you no more than ten minutes to have red carpet hair!

I don’t think this trend is going anytime soon, I wonder if it’s going to continue to the Golden Globes, or will they muster up something new? I guess we shall have to wait and see. Until then, plug in those hot rollers and pull out the hairspray!

What are you doing for New Years….?

Right after Thanksgiving, I started getting asked the same question by my clients and friends…”what are you doing for New Years?” I don’t know why, but this question stresses me out! I hadn’t even prepared for Christmas, how can I begin to start to think about New Years. Well, we at the salon have successfully survived the Christmas rush, so 2010 here we come! 
Naturally as a girl you first think, what am I going to wear? Ha! So I have the dress, hopefully it isn’t ridiculously cold where I have to cover it up with my Arctic Parka!



Okay so we have the dress covered, shoes and bag can be found in my overflowing closet, so now what next? HAIR! What kind of hairstyle do I want? I’m thinking a New Years Eve blowout will do the trick! Face it ladies, your blowdry always looks better when it’s done by a professional.

How to get the Farah Fawcett Hairstyle ?

As a stylist, there are certain style icons of hair that you never forget: Twiggy, Rachael (Friends), the “Posh” cut, and most of all Farah Fawcett! With every era there is a cut or style that everyone wants. You all know what i’m talking about. When Victoria Beckham stepped out with her stacked, a-symmetrical bob, how many of your friends went out and got the same cut? In one day I did six in a row! I can do that cut with my eyes closed.


Well, as the cold weather is slowly approaching, everyone wants something “hot” for winter. Well, Farah (God rest her soul) is “hot” for winter. Artists always become sought-after when they pass, so why shouldn’t it be the same for haircuts? In tribute of Farah Fawcett, her style is coming back! Yay! Long, layered hair is in ladies. I’m not talking about those bone straight styles we get with a flat iron. Give your CHI a bit of hibernation time, and whip out those hot rollers. Long, sexy, bouncy, flirty hair is all the rage. Have a kick in your step and some bounce in your hair as we all pay tribute to Charlies original angel!

Okay, I know what you all are thinking…. How do I accomplish this look? Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo (I know we have a recession and Pantene/Herbal Essence is easy on the pocket, but for a couple more dollars you will really see and feel the difference in a true professional product–Redken, Pureology, Paul Mitchell) . Next, towel-dry your hair to get most of the moisture out. Massage a dollop (handful) of mouse through your ends, then whip your head upside down and dry it completely with the blow-dryer. Meanwhile your hot-rollers should be plugged and warming up. Once your hair is dry, take small to medium sections and wrap your hair around the rollers , making sure your ends lay smooth on the roller. After rolling on the rollers give them all a spray (a pliable hairspray will do the trick), let them cool on your head for 15-20 minutes. Take the rollers out and give it a gentle finger comb, and your done!! Does Short Hair Turn You On, Baby?

If I had a penny for every time someone said to me they are growing their hair out, I would have “a pretty penny!” Ladies, why do we insist on growing our hair out? All we do is wash and go, let it just hang there and hope that the layers will give us volume; or we just put it in a ponytail! WHY ARE WE GROWING OUR HAIR OUT??(Except of course when we are growing it out to donate to a great cause like Locks of Love)
Okay, so here is the badass guide for fall: SHORT HAIR CUTS TURN US ON!! Chop off that hair, liberate yourself and get a sexy short hair styles today! Lets face it, short haircuts are easier to style, always look good and there is something for everyone. Obviously not everyone can have a pixie haircut, but anything above the shoulders will do. Try something that is just shy of being able to be put up in a ponytail. If you can tie your hair back, it defeats the purpose of getting a sexy short hair style.



I know that cutting your hair off is frightening, so be sure you are ready. Look at pictures online to find styles you like and even styles you don’t like. If you give your stylist an idea of what you do and don’t like, it will give them a better sense of what you are looking for. Be open to ideas from your stylist, and most importantly, make sure you are on the same page before those scissors come out.

Straight Hair, 3 Ways

Everyone loves straight hair. It’s the driving force behind a plethora of products, ionic blow-dryers and oh, those infamous Chi Irons. Soft, straight hair that you can’t resist running your fingers through. How do you want it? Do you want that pin-straight hair, the full bouncy locks or a natural look that moves with you?

Natural

Your hair shouldn’t look like you took to much time to fix it. It should still be blow-dried so you aren’t leaving your house with soppy hair. Instead of using a round brush, use your fingers: comb through or scrunch at your discretion. Play with it, don’t be afraid to try new things with your hair. For extra height blow-dry upside down.
Volume

Lift at the roots is what you desire. There are certain tricks of the trade to get this look. First off, you NEED a root lifter. There is no way around it. Spray the product on your crown and proceed to blow-dry with a wide-barrel round brush. Before you pick up your round brush (stay clear of those tiny weeny brushes) blow-dry upside down until your hair is 80% dry, then proceed to your tools. This is my favorite round brush to use: Cricket Quadrus Thermal Brush
Note: Curly/wavy hair beware. Be very careful to not frizz up your hair by blow drying upside down
Pin-Straight

Pin-straight, silky, shiny hair is your choice. Heat up that flat-iron ladies and lather up on a heat/thermal protector. First fully dry your hair using your blow-dryer and a flat bristle brush. Add some shine drops just to your ends and flat iron like usual.
Note: you don’t need to crank up your flat iron to the max heat. A good iron will reach anywhere from 350-400 degrees Farenheit, the same temperature you need to roast a TURKEY. Trust me, you don’t need this much heat, your hair will suffer.

1. Shampoo: There are so many need-specific shampoos out there that you shouldn’t be using “just shampoo.” Do you need frizz control, a smoothing shampoo, something for volume, etc. Be specific.
